PE Unit Planning During Quarantine
Adapting practical Physical Education to an online learning platform has proven to be a difficult task. The PE department S.O.W’s are predominately based upon having students on the field or in the gym. For the first bimester the PE team focussed on health and wellbeing, educating students on ways to cope with the sedentary nature of the quarantine, both, physically and mentally. In the second half of bimester 2 the students will complete their athletics unit of work. The PE team have existing summative assessments in google forms and quizizz which can be used to measure conceptual knowledge at the end of the unit. But, very little else exists online which can be used to meet the new national curriculum competencies.
Using the S1 unit as an example, students over a 4 week period will learn theoretically about diet, nutrition and the energy balance required for different athletes. They will undertake athletics workouts for sprinters, jumpers or throwers. Workouts are differentiated by years including a warm up, technique drill and a general strength circuit. Give one the workouts a try below.
Finally, the students will complete a quadrathlon where breakout rooms will be used for students to officiate, score and input results for 4 events; 5m x 20 shuttle, target throw, wall sit and plank.
